It all began in Italy in the 1930's, when, father and grandfather, Pietro Calandra, started a collection of various motorcycles and ultimately competed in hill climb events at an amateur level.
Gaspare Vittorio Calandra was born. In his early years, his father would take him to the local race circuit in Cape Town to watch a combination of motorsport events, cars and motorbikes. This triggered off his passion for motorsport and so began his interest and obsessive passion for race cars. At the age of 10, his dream was born, where he would imagine seeing himself building and driving the race cars which he saw on the track.
He participated as a formula Ford mechanic while studying his Mechanical Engineering degree to gain understanding and experience of race cars. He also built various wooden models of Formula Ford cars. After graduating in Mechanical Engineering, he designs his own Formula Ford chassis. He finally decides to work as a design engineer for Audi, BMW, GM, VW, SEAT, Mercedes and Bentley.
He presents his first prototype scale model at the Spanish Automotive Show in Barcelona, the Calandra GTR.
His son, Piero Gaspare Calandra joins the project and together with the same passion, commitment and dedication, they both achieved what we see today, the Calandra P001.
